Citizenship by Descent
A person may obtain Australian citizenship by descent if one of their parents was an Australian citizen at the time of the person’s birth. Citizenship by descent applicants must be registered as an Australian Citizen before they are eligible to apply for an Australian passport.
If the applicant’s parent also acquired their Australian citizenship by descent, the parent must have been present in Australia for periods totalling two years during their lifetime in order for the applicant to now be registered as an Australian citizen by descent.
The preferred application method is online lodgement through ImmiAccount. To limit delays in processing your application for citizenship by descent, you should provide all the documents we require at the time you lodge the application.

Citizenship by Adoption
Please refer to https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/trav/citi/pathways-processes/application-options/adoption if you, or your child, was adopted outside Australia by an Australian citizen and the adoption was completed by:
- the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption; or
- a bilateral arrangement between Australia and another country

Only children who have been adopted by the Australian inter-country adoption program are eligible for Citizenship by Adoption. Children adopted through other means, or by permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens should refer to the Department of Home Affairs information on Adoption (subclass 102) visa.

Citizenship by Conferral
Australian citizenship may be conferred upon permanent residents of Australia who have resided in Australia for the required period of time, and meet all other requirements.
